Homicide Map on Fark

The Baltimore Homicide Map I built in June at baltimoresun.com landed on Fark.com today. There was a significant boost in traffic to the map (ten times the daily average in the two hours after Fark posted the link) and some interesting/funny comments about the state of crime in Baltimore.

Update: The map also appeared on MetaFilter the day before as “Death Map of Baltimore.” Great week for site traffic!

  1. You are my GOD!

Just kidding. But I do admire your programming skills. And your ability to wait for the “deal” for 360. I’m not that patient. News graphics doesn’t pay very well, that’s why I’ve taken to robbing banks. Okay, not.

I’ve sent several emails (well attempted to) at the Sun, begging/asking nicely for your help with my mashup. Every one is undeliverable? Don’t they let you interact with the public? I used to work in TV news and they kept up graphics folks in the back of the building in the dark.

Did you write the code yourself, or use tutorials, or just reverse engineer some maps?

    Love to pick your brain.
